Did we ever get any backstory about Jade being John Stape's daughter? If so I must have missed it. He was born in 1978 so he was 33 when he died. I don't recall him or Fiz ever mentioning he had a daughter. It would have made more sense if they had made her his sister and not his daughter. Apparently she is 23 which means he would be about 42 now and so would have been 19 when she was born which I suppose is plausible. I suppose we will find out more about her history when Jade's schemes all comes to light!

I don't think we know more than that. It could be that John Stape didn't even know he had a daughter or, if he did, he certainly didn't spend much (any?) time with her. It seems strange that she would be so attached to him. There must be more to the story that hasn't come out yet.

I think Jade being his sister would have been better too.

It is pluasible (but a long shot) if Jade's adoptive parents informed her of her birth mother. That woman would then have to have told her who her father was. John may have not known if the parents of the pregnant teen wanted to keep things hush. Just a guess of course.

Gail, it really doesn't make sense, does it? If I remember correctly, Fiz knew John from before the time he came onto the street. Presumably when they were both quite young.
That would mean it's doubly hard to believe she didn't know he had a daughter.

You're right, Alice, I also recall that John and Fiz knew each other growing up or as teenagers and looked it up:

"John was born in 1978. When he was nineteen, he was working as a DJ when he met thirteen-year-old Fiz Brown, and was popular with the girls, but was only interested in Fiz.

Unfortunately, Fiz spent most of her time in foster care, and she and John had lost contact before he went to university."

So, John was 19 in 1997, which is barely 23 years ago. If Jade was born from a relationship after that, she could only be about 22 now. That seems too young to be a qualified teacher working with disturbed children. (Unless Jade isn't really qualified and had stolen some other teacher's identity. lol )

If Jade is from a relationship before he first knew Fizz, you'd think Fizz would know about it. Here's my guess (not a spoiler) - When John was 19, he had an affair with Fizz and didn't tell her he had a girlfriend and young daughter at home. The girlfriend finds out and breaks up with John, maybe moving away or otherwise refusing to ever let him see his daughter again. If Jade's mother told her Fizz was to blame for wrecking their family, that could explain the revenge she is seeking against Fizz. So, that's my best guess - I can't think of any other explanation! Any other ideas?

Also, I think it's creepy that John was 19 and going after a 13 year old. It's not just the age difference - a 13 year old is a child!

Maggie, many thanks for doing all that research and sharing it with us. This story raises so many questions.

Yes, thanks for that info Maggie. I had forgotten that John and Fiz had an offscreen history going back a ways. I still think it would have made more sense it Jade was his sister. It's a bit of a stretch to believe he had a daughter that Fiz never knew about and that he never mentioned.
